Adios, Pearl!

Adios, Pearl!, originally uploaded by stevevoght.

With a mix of sadness and excitement, Pearl was adopted yesterday after a whirlwind romance by a family with several pre-teen kids and a big, cat-friendly dog. The flirtation started shortly after lunchtime, and by 5 pm their eyes had locked and they were drawn inextricably toward one another. The kids convinced mom to race to the shelter before closing to finish the paperwork, and by 7 pm she was whisked off on a new adventure, filled with exciting new toys, new rooms to explore, and big dogs to harass and chase around the house.

Cascadurday: A weekend loop through the North Cascades

Beaver Pond reflections, originally uploaded by stevevoght.

Last weekend, we went on a loop of the North Cascades to see some foliage and wildlife, and to escape a seemingly-growing pile of black fur (also apparently it was a birthday or something like that.) We were successful on all accounts, and here's the evidence. My new copy of Adobe Lightroom 2 has some fun features and development presets that let me really bring out the *POP* in these photos. See the whole set here.

I hired a Steller's Jay for some photography work in July. He worked for peanuts... literally. View the entire set here.

Vote Early, Vote Pearly

Last evening I posted a new photo of Pearl to Flickr in anticipation of linking it here at some point in the near future. Apparently the Purina company beat me to the punch and snagged it for a new website they've developed, which collects various pet-related stories, photos, and videos from around the web and lets the public vote on them. I caught wind of it before the photo went public because I saw the access info on Flickr, so I got a jump on when it went live tonight at 9 pm PDT (midnight Eastern.)  Here's a screengrab as of 10pm PDT (click for full size):

She's #1 for the day with 12 votes so far! You can help by going to this site, find her picture, and then click the green 'vote now' paw (it's shaded gray in the above picture because I already voted.) We'll have to wait and see how long she reigns supreme... there are a few tough competitors in there.

I guess there's no more pretending that summer's just on temporary hiatus.

The dangers of studying your roots

...discovering there are some really dense logs in there.  Via Ancestry.com's "Find Famous Relatives" feature:

Both via distant ancestors of my paternal grandmother's mother.  (There were at least a few semi-respectable ones in there too, such as Mark Twain, John Wayne, and Frank Lloyd Wright...)

Caturday: New Kits on the Block

Pearl was lonely. Jasper was cranky. Solution? MOAR KITTENZ! (Isn't this the solution to most of life's problems?)

Colby Jack... and his (biological, this time) sister...

Lucie. Note that she's not always tongue-tied like that, but she was still a bit sniffly at the time of the photo. So despite Jasper catching another mild URI from fosters, he's now much happier as the black cat brigade is joyfully playing with each other instead of with his tail.
